2010 Gathering

Our first gathering of the Young Pastors Network will take place July 20-22, 2010 in Kansas City. Our time together will be facilitated by Peter Cha and Lee Eclov around the theme “Ministry as Improv.”

The Theme – Ministry as Improv

One of the highlights of Kansas City is it’s Jazz district. Jazz music is a uniquely creative endeavor. The beauty of jazz music is found in the creativity and collaboration of the performers creating music together through improvisation upon a shared musical foundation. Learning to play music in this way requires trust in one another and commitment to the musical foundation to which each musician adds their own musical flair as each one plays a part.

The ability work with others in ministry, whether in our own churches or simply those who share a common foundation, is an essential skill to learn in the early years of pastoral ministry. Like good jazz musicians, good leaders need to improvise—blending disciplined planning with the ability to respond with creativity and courage as new opportunities and challenges arise.

Sessions

Session 1: Ministry as Improvisation

Why Improvisation? During this session we will explore the intersection between pastoral ministry and improvisation with Pastor Lee Eclov and the intersection between improvisation and leadership in the 21st century with Peter Cha.

Session 2: Ministry as Tragedy

We experience joys as well as pains in ministry. This session will focus on the times of “tragedy,” when we don’t experience the happy ending. Peter and Lee will facilitate our time together as we discuss what improvisation has to teach us in times of brokenness and lament and take some time to share with one another our own stories of ministry as tragedy.

Session 3: Ministry as Comedy

Ministry is also full of laughter and irony. During this session we will hear from one another and our speakers about the humorous moments of ministry and how we can learn and grow in those times.

Session 4: Ministry as Routine

What are some of the personal practices of an improvising pastor? What about an improvising congregation? Peter and Lee will share their insights with us as we think together about the habits of heart and life that will sustain us as we move forward in ministry.
